As a Level 1 Maintenance or ERT Operative, you will play a vital part in keeping the network safe, reliable and running smoothly. From responding to incidents and clearing hazards to carrying out essential maintenance, no two days will be the same.
You will be part of a supportive team, gaining hands‑on experience across a wide range of activities while developing your skills in a dynamic environment. This is a role where you can grow, take pride in your work and make a visible impact every day.
What you'll be doing
- Supporting day‑to‑day maintenance of the network, from repairs and inspections to keeping areas clean and safe
- Responding to incidents and hazards to help keep traffic moving smoothly
- Setting up and working safely within traffic management guidelines
- Using equipment and digital tools to record work and report issues
- Carrying out vehicle and equipment checks, ensuring everything is ready and safe to use
- Working as part of a team that puts safety first, looks out for each other and takes pride in what they do
Who we're looking for
We're looking for someone practical, safety‑focused and ready to be part of a supportive team making a real difference on the network.
You will have
- A full UK driving licence (LGV Class 2)
- A valid CSCS Operative card
- Experience working in highways, maintenance or a similar operational environment
- The ability to work safely, follow instructions and contribute to a Zero Harm culture
- A proactive, team‑focused approach and willingness to learn
It would be great if you also have
- Additional licences or qualifications such as LGV Class 1, traffic management or highways maintenance
- Experience working on live motorway or trunk road networks
- Relevant plant, equipment or safety certifications
This role suits someone who enjoys hands‑on work, takes pride in safety and is keen to build a long‑term career in highways.
