The role
Joining Arup
Arup's purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.
Our Transport Consulting team is helping to shape the future of cities, places and infrastructure. We work with clients to create environments that are sustainable, inclusive and people-focused, bringing together expertise from across Arup to deliver integrated transport and development planning solutions for complex urban environments in the UK and internationally.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a Senior / Principal Transport Planner to join our innovative and collaborative Transport Consulting team. You will have the opportunity to work across a diverse portfolio of high-profile development and infrastructure projects, from major regeneration schemes and masterplans to new towns, building refurbishments and extensions, and nationally significant infrastructure.
The role combines development planning with a strong focus on sustainable transport and bus planning, including strategy, operations, infrastructure and fleet. You will support commissions for clients including the DfT and Local Authorities, helping to develop practical, evidence-based solutions to complex transport challenges. As a trusted advisor, you will provide strategic and technical transport advice, develop sustainable and evidence-based solutions, manage project quality and commercial performance, build strong client relationships, mentor junior colleagues, and support business development.
You will contribute to a broad and varied portfolio, including major regeneration and development schemes such as Southall Gas Works, Canada Water and the London Cancer Hub, and central London development schemes such as Broadgate, British Library and the O2 Centre, as well as new towns and strategic housing projects across the UK. Our work also spans nationally significant infrastructure, including Heathrow expansion, HS2 and Euston Station, alongside stadium and major event projects. In addition, you will have the opportunity to contribute to our growing bus portfolio, covering areas such as policy and reform, network planning, strategic corridor development, zero-emission fleet transition and commercial due diligence for operators and investors.
At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective where we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from the way we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning, to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.
Is this role right for you?
We would love to hear from you if you bring a combination of the following:
ยท Understanding of how transport supports development, placemaking and policy objectives
ยท Experience in the UK planning and development environment
ยท Experience leading transport and development planning projects, from early advice and design to technical assurance and planning submissions
ยท Passion for sustainable transport, Net Zero and better mobility
ยท Experience or strong interest in bus planning, strategy or operations
ยท Ability to assess future transport demand and network needs, applying design guidance to development and infrastructure projects
ยท Experience developing transport strategies and agreeing technical approaches with Local Authorities and stakeholders
ยท Project management experience across programme, budget, quality and commercial performance
ยท Confidence building trusted client relationships and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams
At Senior or Principal level, we are also looking for someone who is enthusiastic about developing others, contributing to work winning and business development, and growing their own leadership capability within a supportive and collaborative team.
You do not need to meet every requirement to apply. If you have strong transport planning experience and believe your skills could add value to our team, we would be pleased to hear from you.
